Virtually the first standing set built after Republic Studios began operation, the Western Street was
built in late 1935/early 1936. In length it was only 3 short blocks, running east/west. At the west end of the street, facing east was a large train station and railroad tracks. One block east, where New York Street intersected with Western Street, on the north side was a facade that covered Stage 8. The south side of the street for one block heading east from New York Street, were two stages: 7 and 13, both fronted by western facades (on the south and west side of the stages, they were covered by New York Street facades). Where Cantina Street met Western Street, on the northeast corner was a building whose corner faced the intersection at a 45 degree angle. Across the street from stage 7, to the east, was a building that usually served as a warehouse, blacksmith shop, or livery stable, but it also contained the cave sets. At the east end of Western Street, hiding the view of Colfax Avenue beyond, were two buildings: the left one was usually a sheriff's office or jail, while the right one was a general store or rooming house.
In April 1946, the street was refurbished with additional structures erected.
